My name is Catriona Cuschieri and I am Malta’s Discus & Shot put record holder in the cadets section. I attend St. Monica School Birkirkara and I am currently in Form 3. I will be 14 years old on the 4th of January and that is when I will start competing with the Youth section. I started training athletics when my coach Zeljko Aras had visited our school, searching for potential athletes. I was interested and therefore I started training at the age of 10 years. At first I was focusing on running but I immediately noticed that the ‘throwing events’ were the area I should specialise in. Hence, from then on I started practising the Discus and later on even the Shot Put.
The fact that I began gaining good results and placing first place in Discus and Shot put competitions made me work harder in order to achieve the privilege of breaking a national record and this I succesfully reached my aim when I threw the Discus 24 metres beating the previous record by around 2 metres. Then on the same day, during the same competition, on the 3rd and last throw, I broke my own record by adding another 2 metres, establishing the standing national record of 26.02 metres. During the summer I also worked hard to achieve good results in the Shot put. Even though I did well I did not manage to break the record on the first try. However, I never looked back and kept training always harder. I had my last chance as a cadet to leave my mark on the national record books for the shot put. This was in the last competition that I could compete in as a cadet. In fact I managed to break the shot put national record with a throw of 9.92 metres!
I am extremely happy and proud of my achievements so far but these would mean nothing if I had to stop here. I look forward to keep working hard and achieving more honourable results, thanks to the support of my coach and the help of my family.
